| Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a program that empowers
managers and employee wellness coordinators to deal with
psychological problems in the workplace in South Africa.
MHFA is an ideal product as it provides managers and staff
with the tools required to recognise symptoms, provide
initial help, guide and arrange for appropriate assistance.
In the absence of immediate counselling services or
specialised care facilities Mental Health First Aid
provides a tool that can be used for containment of
psychological conditions whilst counselling services
or other appropriate interventions are sourced.
At least forty percent of ill health retirement or
absence from work in the public sector is due to psychological
conditions. In a region that faces acute shortage of
professional mental health staff this trend is concerning.
Training Model
Zeal Health Innovations conducts a twelve hour training
session for managers and employee wellness coordinators
to teach how to give first aid to someone showing signs
of psychological strain whilst remaining calm and confident
and to respond in an appropriate way to give the best
help. The training will cover a first aid action plan
involving:
Assessment of suicide risk or harm
Listening non-judgmentally
Giving reassurance and information
Encouraging person to get appropriate professional help
Encouraging self-help strategies
At regular intervals the trained individuals are provided
with updates and refresher material as compiled by our
clinicians. Trainees will also have access to a web
based helpline for support and advice. On an annual
basis the trainees will be requested to update their
practising certificate by attending a refresher course.
